In July 1971 the 300 SEL 6.8 AMG caused a sensation at the 24-hour race in Spa when it scooped victory in its class and second place overall. The car, affectionately known as the "Red Pig", became a legend, bringing AMG instant fame around the world. A large measure of the success was due to the drivers Hans Heyer and Clemens Schickedanz.
The 300 SEL 6.8 AMG produced in 1971 had a special 6.8-litre V8 engine, an output of 428 hp and a top speed of 265 km/h.
