Mercedes‑Benz dominated international luxury class market in the 1930s with its eight-cylinder compressor vehicles.
The “Type 500 with compressor engine”, or 500 K for short, appeared in 1934 in eight different body variants: a streamline saloon, evocatively known as the “Autobahn-Kurierwagen” (motorway courier), a 4-door saloon, known at the time as the “Innenlenker” (saloon), three different cabriolet variants, a 2-door open-top touring car and a roadster.
The crowning glory of all of the variants was the particularly elegant and luxurious Special Roadster, of which only 29 were built. The 500 K and its successor the 540 K became legends not only because of their impressive power delivery, but also as a result of their captivating bodywork and high-quality features. The precision-tailored form and elegant, flowing lines of “Sindelfingen bodywork” have been the benchmark since the 1930s.
