Product Description

Many of the demanding, performance-oriented clientele who tended to favour the powerful, large-displacement models of the Mercedes‑Benz “S” series felt that the engine of the 380 was not powerful enough. They did not have to wait long for Daimler‑Benz’s emphatic response. In March 1934 a new model was presented at the International Automobile and Motorcycle Show in Berlin, where the 380 had made its debut just a year earlier. The new model went on to succeed the previous model within the course of the year.

Just one specimen of the new “Type 500 with compressor engine” was displayed in Berlin. The price list indicated that the exhibited vehicle, the “Autobahn-Kurierwagen” (motorway courier) as it was known, had been “built to individual specifications for particularly high speed”. According to circulars from the sales department it was often seen as the highlight of the show.

In official statements and publications the 5-litre compressor vehicle, known internally as the W29, was predominantly referred to as the “Type 500 with compressor engine”. The name 500 K, which is generally used today, was less common at the time.

500 K Special Roadster, W29, 1935, red. Diecast metal. Approx. 7.62 cm (3 inches). Genuine paintwork colours. Accurate reproduction. High-quality printed interior. Age 3+. By Norev for Mercedes-Benz.
