Product Description

The 300 SL “Gullwing” made its debut at the International Motor Sport Show in New York in February 1954.
The high-performance sports car was based on the legendary 1952-season racing car. A lightweight yet high-strength space frame supported the engine, transmission and axles. As on the race car version, however, it left no space for the traditional style of door, and the gullwing doors became an unmistakable hallmark of the 300 SL. In other areas too the “Gullwing” was a truly innovative vehicle: it was the world’s first series-produced passenger car to be powered by a four-stroke engine with petrol injection. This not only ensured increased efficiency but also higher engine output. The 215 hp available – 20 percent more than offered by the race car version with carburettor – allowed a top speed of up to 250 km/h. This made the 300 SL the fastest series-produced vehicle of its time and the dream sports car of the 1950s.
