In March 1902 the Mercedes-Simplex 40 hp superseded the legendary Mercedes 35 hp.
The name “Simplex” referred to the new model’s simplified handling. Its predecessor, the first vehicle to go by the brand name Mercedes, became an instant legend: in December 1900 it defined automobile design and is still seen today as a masterpiece of technical finesse and aesthetic appeal. Characteristic features included the elongated form, the lightweight, high-performance engine with its low centre of gravity and the hallmark honeycomb radiator, organically integrated into the front of the vehicle. The Mercedes 35 hp marked a definitive departure from the then predominant carriage style of vehicle and is therefore seen as the first modern automobile.
